October 3, 2016
The user's computer was not connecting to the internet so I applied Dale's Rule #1 to the router and the internet connection was restored.

Disk Errors in Event Log

The initial symptom that led me to investigate this computer was that it would not shutdown under program control. When I tried to use Chrome to interrogate the router, Chrome was non responsive.  The next thing was to check the event log where I found a number of disk errors. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not finish the error reporting code for drive failure before releasing Windows to the public and the report pointed to /D which was the CD Rom.  Using the Western Digital "Lifeguard Tools" saved the day and indicated that it was in fact Drive C that was failing.  So now it is a matter of replacing the existing hard drive which contains all the user programs. word documents and pictures without loosing a single bit.  Using a drive copy program, all files were transferred to the new drive. Not only were the files there, but also the desktop organization so that the user could see no difference from the failed system except to see that the error log now reported no drive failures. This is HUGE since the user had NO LEARNING CURVE after the repair!
